The average cost for the transport, scrapping and recycling of each boat is 611 euros.
During the year 2024, the number of small boats collected in the ports managed by PortsIB has risen to 51, a figure that corresponds to the boats abandoned after the arrival of migrants in the ports that depend on the Regional Ministry of the Sea and Water Cycle. Currently, six of these vessels are in the ports awaiting transfer to the Son Tous facilities in Palma, where a total of 84 vessels are pending destruction.
Since 2020, PortsIB has managed the collection of 268 boats, with variations in the number of ships registered each year: 29 in 2020, 55 in 2021, a peak of 87 in 2022, 46 in 2023 and 51 in 2024. More than 160,000 euros have been earmarked from the budget for the transport, scrapping and recycling of these vessels, with an average cost per patera of 611 euros.

PortsIB collects a total of 51 boats arriving on the Balearic coast in 2024
As for the year 2024, the boats have been distributed as follows: Colònia de Sant Jordi has registered 19 patera boats, Portocolom has collected 17, Cabrera 9, Cala Figuera and Porto Cristo 2 each, while Andratx and Portopetro have collected one respectively.
Considering the total period since 2020, the most common ports of entry for these vessels are Colònia de Sant Jordi, Cabrera and Portocolom. Other important access points include Cala Figuera, Sant Antoni de Ibiza, Portopetro, Sa Ràpita, Andratx and Porto Cristo.
In its commitment to ensuring that these resources have a positive impact on the community, PortsIB has loaned boats and engines recovered from the ships to various training centres in the maritime sector in the Balearic Islands. The aim of this loan is to support the practical training of students, allowing them to familiarise themselves with the structures in a real environment.
In total, two 6-metre fibreglass boats and five engines, four of which are 40 hp and one 50 hp, have been loaned in 2024. Because of the success obtained and the good reception by the educational centres, it is planned to continue with this practice on future occasions.
Through these tasks, the safety, cleanliness and efficiency of the ports of the archipelago are guaranteed, thus reaffirming PortsIB’s commitment to sustainability, the modernisation of facilities and the maintenance of infrastructures to ensure their operability in the Balearic Islands.
