A new roundabout improves safety at the Benirràs, Sant Miquel and Sant Joan junction

The president of the Consell, the mayor of Sant Joan, and the residents of the area visited the new roundabout built by the City Council, which received funding from the island institution, amounting to 750,000 euros.

The president of the Eivissa Island Council, Vicent Marí, and the mayoress of San Juan de Labritja, Tania Marí, accompanied by the councillor for Mobility and Road Infrastructures, Mariano Juan, and residents of the Benirràs, Sant Miquel and Sant Joan areas, today visited the new roundabout and bus stop that has been set up in this area to improve safety at a junction which, as the mayoress Tania Marí said, ‘was a black spot in our road network and this intervention was necessary’.

As the mayoress of Sant Joan explained, this is a demand of the residents of the area who ‘have suffered from this dangerous stretch and now, thanks to the collaboration of the Consell, which has financed the work, the Town Hall has been able to carry it out’. The roundabout had an initial tender budget of 836,155 euros but was finally awarded for 750,000 euros. The works also included other works such as the burying of communications and electricity lines and a new desalinated water distribution route. ‘We are celebrating because residents and visitors can now pass through this section safely,’ concluded the mayoress.

For his part, the president of the Consell de Eivissa, Vicent Marí, thanked the Town Council for promoting, drawing up the project and directing the work on this roundabout, ‘an example of how collaboration between administrations benefits everyone, which, in this case, has allowed the work to be carried out in a short time’. The Council has collaborated with the financing and technical advice for this work.

The new 30-metre diameter roundabout replaces the dangerous X-junction that was present and which presented visibility problems, leading to accidents. The layout of the municipal roads had to be corrected to connect with the roundabout.

New lighting has been installed, which is important to warn of the roundabout in advance, safety barriers and the corresponding vertical signage, as well as drainage collectors, have been installed to give continuity to the water from the road,

To build this roundabout, land from two properties had to be expropriated, with the full cooperation of the landowners.
