Between installed and planned places, the Consell Insular’s forecast is to close 2025 with 450 electric vehicle recharging places on the island.
The Department of Environment, Biosphere Reserve and Cooperation of the Consell Insular de Menorca, which oversees the public MELIB electric vehicle charging network on the island, has published data on the operation of the network during 2024. Among the data, it highlights that the number of electric vehicle recharges in Menorca continues to increase, with 20.5% more than in 2023 and a total of 25,733 charges requested.

The number of electric vehicle charging stations continues to increase in Menorca with 20% more than in 2023
This increase indicates that the use of electric vehicles on the island continues to rise, thanks also to the maintenance of the availability of the MELIB network, which, as in 2023, was 70% in 2024. The leap in availability took place in 2023, from 46% to the current figure.
More charging stations
During this past 2024, the Consell Insular and the island’s town councils have also increased the number of charging stations and charging stations in the MELIB network in Menorca. Currently, the public network has 114 recharging stations, 18 more than in 2023. There are 42 more charging stations under construction, and 110 already planned. Between places installed, in execution and planning, Menorca would add up to 266 recharging point places, to which 184 more places should be added during the current year. In total, the Consell de Menorca expects to close in 2025 with 450 EV charging points installed or planned for the island.
These actions are part of the Plan for the Development of the Network of Charging Points (PDR) for Electric Vehicles (EV) in Menorca, which aims to achieve 18% electrification of the island’s vehicle fleet by 2030.
According to Consell Insular’s estimates, a total of 1,300 charging points will need to be installed to achieve the 28% electrification of Menorca’s vehicle fleet (around 14,000 vehicles). 50% will have to be purchased by the administration, around 700 public charging points, to comply with the ratio of 10 EVs per charging point established by the EU. The remaining 50% would be taken over by the private sector in response to the strong demand for EVs in recent years and the attractive business opportunities in the sector.
Load energy and fuel savings during 2024
The total energy demanded from the loads requested in the MELIB network in Menorca during 2024 was 372,036 kWh/year. This amount of energy would allow 2,480,240 km to be driven efficiently and would avoid the consumption of 148,814 litres of petrol. The estimated cost of the total number of charges is 85,018.78 €, and the equivalent in petrol is 254,919 €, with the consequent saving by using the electric vehicle.
The average charge requested per vehicle was 14.46 kWh, sufficient for a 96 km journey for €3.30. For this distance, the cost of petrol would be approximately 10.28 €.
All recharging points in the public network of Menorca have contracted the supply of electricity with 100% renewable energy certification. For this reason, the recharging of electric vehicles in this network does not generate CO2 emissions.
‘The use and expansion of the network of charging points in Menorca continue to rise, which indicates that the electric vehicle in Menorca is of interest and above all feasible. The characteristics of our island make the electrification of our vehicle fleet a great opportunity to reduce emissions and the use of fossil fuels in compliance with both our decarbonisation strategy and European regulations’, explained the councillor for the Environment, Biosphere Reserve and Cooperation, Simón Gornés.
According to data from the Menorca 2030 Strategy, terrestrial mobility accounts for 23% of emissions into the atmosphere on the island. The objective set by the plan proposes a 50% reduction in the use of automotive fuels and a commitment to a new model of mobility.
Consultation or incidents in the MELIB network
The MELIB network in Menorca is operated and maintained thanks to an agreement signed with the Balearic Institute of Energy (IBE) of the Balearic Government, with the Consell Insular de Menorca assuming the functions of supervision of the operational status.
